Game of Thrones: War for Westeros Delayed to 2027

Fans waiting for Game of Thrones: War for Westeros will have to wait a little longer. Developer PlaySide Studios has confirmed that the upcoming real-time strategy (RTS) game is no longer scheduled to launch in 2026, with its release now pushed back to 2027.

While the delay may disappoint eager players, the studio says development is progressing well and has shared new details about the game's combat and overall design.

A Strategy Game Built Around the HBO Series

Unlike previous Game of Thrones games inspired by George R.R. Martin's novels, War for Westeros is based directly on HBO's television adaptation.

The game features familiar characters, locations, and factions from the TV series, with players leading the great houses of Westeros in large-scale battles and political conflicts.

Massive Battles and Asymmetric Factions

PlaySide promises a traditional RTS experience centered on:
  • Large armies clashing across iconic battlefields.
  • Unique factions with distinct units and playstyles.
  • Legendary heroes with special abilities.
  • Strategic alliances and political decision-making.
  • Different mechanics tailored to each house.

The goal is to make every faction feel unique while encouraging different tactical approaches.

Combat Focuses on Strategy and Physics

One of the biggest highlights from the latest development update is the emphasis on responsive, physical combat.

According to the developers, units will react realistically during battles. For example:

  • Charging cavalry can smash through weaker infantry formations.
  • Players must build balanced armies instead of relying on a single unit type.
  • Spear units and other anti-cavalry troops become essential counters against mounted charges.

This rock-paper-scissors approach aims to reward tactical planning rather than simply overwhelming opponents with numbers.

More Time for Polish

Although the game has remained relatively quiet since its reveal, PlaySide says the additional development time will allow the team to refine gameplay and deliver a stronger strategy experience.

With its blend of large-scale warfare, iconic HBO characters, and classic RTS mechanics, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros remains one of the more anticipated strategy games on the horizon even if players will now have to wait until 2027 to march into battle for the Iron Throne.
