Final Fantasy 14 Mobile Is Shutting Down Before Its Global Release

Square Enix's attempt to bring Final Fantasy XIV to mobile devices has officially come to an end. Just over a year after launching in China, Final Fantasy XIV Mobile is shutting down, and its planned global release has been canceled before players outside China ever had the chance to try it.

A Short Lived Mobile Adventure

Originally announced in November 2024, Final Fantasy XIV Mobile was developed by LightSpeed Studios, the team behind PUBG Mobile, under license from Square Enix.

Rather than being a direct port of the popular MMORPG, the mobile version was redesigned specifically for smartphones. It featured:

  • The A Realm Reborn storyline up to version 2.0.
  • Simplified quests, jobs, and gameplay systems.
  • Streamlined controls for mobile devices.
  • Several quality-of-life improvements inspired by later expansions.

Features Fans Wanted in the Main Game

Despite its limited scope, the mobile version introduced several improvements that impressed longtime Final Fantasy XIV players, including:
  • A more intuitive glamour (transmog) system.
  • Easier materia management.
  • Improved inventory organization.
  • More dynamic overworld FATE events.
  • New cosmetic options, including highly detailed hairstyles.

Many fans hoped these features would eventually be added to the PC and console versions of the MMORPG.

Why the Game Is Closing

In an official announcement, Tencent and Square Enix said they had mutually agreed to end the licensing agreement due to:

  • Changes in business operations.
  • Shifts in market conditions.

While no specific reason was given, the highly competitive Chinese mobile gaming market is widely believed to have played a major role in the decision.

Global Release Canceled

The announcement also confirmed that the planned worldwide launch will not move forward.

Square Enix apologized to players who had been waiting for the international version, acknowledging that it could not meet their expectations.

Shutdown Schedule

The game's closure is already underway:

  • New player registrations have ended.
  • In-game purchases have been disabled.
  • Final Fantasy XIV Mobile will permanently shut down on September 30.

Although the mobile experiment is ending, many fans hope its best ideas particularly its quality-of-life improvements and cosmetic features will eventually find their way into the main version of Final Fantasy XIV.
